Frequently Asked Questions
CTC (Cost to Company) is the total expense a company incurs for an employee, including basic salary, HRA, PF employer contribution, insurance, and other benefits. In-hand salary is what you actually receive after deducting PF employee contribution, professional tax, and income tax (TDS).
Professional tax varies by state. In Maharashtra and Karnataka, the maximum is Rs 2,500 per year (Rs 200/month). In West Bengal, it can go up to Rs 2,500 per year on a slab basis. Some states like Rajasthan, Delhi, and Haryana do not levy professional tax.
Both employee and employer contribute 12% of basic salary plus DA to PF. The employee's entire 12% goes to EPF, while the employer's 12% is split into 8.33% for EPS (capped at Rs 15,000 basic) and 3.67% for EPF.
Yes, employer's PF contribution is typically included in CTC. It is a cost to the company but does not come to you as cash. It accumulates in your PF account and is available at retirement or job change. This is why CTC is always higher than gross salary.
You can optimise by: (1) Structuring salary with higher HRA and lower basic to reduce PF deduction, (2) Claiming all eligible exemptions like HRA, LTA, food coupons, (3) Choosing the right tax regime, (4) Investing in 80C and 80D instruments if on old regime.
