NPS offers triple tax benefits: (1) Up to Rs 1.5 lakh under Section 80CCD(1) within the 80C limit, (2) Additional Rs 50,000 under Section 80CCD(1B) over and above the 80C limit, (3) Employer contribution up to 14% of salary under Section 80CCD(2) with no upper cap — available in both old and new regimes.

At maturity (age 60), 60% of the corpus can be withdrawn as lump sum (tax-free). The remaining 40% must be used to purchase an annuity. The annuity income is taxable as salary in the year of receipt. Premature withdrawal allows only 20% lump sum.

NPS has four asset classes: E (Equity, up to 75%), C (Corporate Bonds), G (Government Securities), and A (Alternative Assets like REITs/InvITs). You can choose Active Choice to set your own allocation or Auto Choice where allocation adjusts based on age.

The minimum initial contribution is Rs 500, and the minimum annual contribution is Rs 1,000 to keep the account active. There is no maximum limit on contributions, but tax benefits are capped at the specified limits under 80CCD.

Yes, you can change your Pension Fund Manager (PFM) once per year through the NPS portal. You can also change your asset allocation within the active choice. Currently, there are 10 PFMs to choose from including SBI, HDFC, ICICI, and LIC.
