What Startups Need From Invoicing Software
A startup's requirements are mostly about change โ you will register for GST at some point, add people, raise volume, and possibly move tools. Written by a vendor; the questions apply to us as much as anyone.

Can you invoice before you are registered?
Plenty of billing tools assume a GSTIN exists. Early on it often does not, and you still need to raise a proper invoice to get paid.
The thing to check is not just whether you can invoice without a GSTIN, but what happens the day you get one. Adding it should change future invoices without rewriting the ones you have already issued โ an invoice is a record of what you charged at the time, and retroactively editing it is not a feature you want.
- Can you raise invoices with no GSTIN on the account?
- When you add a GSTIN later, do already-issued invoices stay untouched?
- Whether and when you must register is a question for your accountant, not for software.
What happens at ten times the volume
The tool that works at five invoices a month is not automatically the one that works at two hundred. The failure mode is rarely dramatic โ it is that everything takes slightly too long.
- Are limits on invoices, customers or items per plan, and where do you land at your projected volume?
- Can you bill repeat customers on a schedule instead of rebuilding the invoice?
- Do payment reminders go out on their own, or does someone have to remember?
- Can you import existing customers and items rather than typing them in?
Adding your second and third person
Sharing one login works until it does not, usually around the time you hire someone who should see invoices but not banking details.
- Does each person get their own login?
- Can access be limited per feature rather than all-or-nothing?
- Is there a record of who changed what?
Getting out
Worth testing during the trial rather than discovering later. Startups change tools โ often when they raise, or when a new CFO arrives with opinions.
- Can you export invoices, customers and payments in a usable format?
- Is there an API if you end up building something internal?
- If your accountant uses Tally, is there a compatible export?
Where we stand
WeSaveTax invoices with or without a GSTIN and does not rewrite issued invoices when you add one. It supports recurring billing, automated reminders, CSV and Excel import, per-feature team permissions enforced server-side, an edit history on documents, exports, a documented REST API, and Tally-compatible XML on higher plans. Plan limits and current prices are on the pricing page.
It is billing software, not accounting software and not a cap table. If you need statutory accounts or fundraising paperwork, those are separate purchases.
